Find the right size
Pick a room. We'll show the rule of thumb our team uses, and work out the numbers for yours.
Dining room
Choose a chandelier about 12 in narrower than your table, and hang its bottom 30 to 36 in above the tabletop.
Living room
Add the room's length and width in feet. That number, in inches, is a good fixture diameter.
Kitchen island
Hang pendants 30 to 36 in above the counter, spaced evenly with about 6 in clear at each end.
Bedroom
Choose a flush or semi-flush ceiling light so its bottom sits at least 7 ft above the floor, then add a pair of bedside table lamps for reading. The bottom of each shade should land near eye level when you sit up in bed.
Hallway
Space sconces evenly along the wall at roughly eye level.
Bathroom
Flank the mirror with a pair of sconces for even light on your face, with no shadows.
Real materials
Natural alabaster, travertine, marble, solid brass and hand-woven rattan. Expect small variations in veining and tone.
