From Desert Sunset to Your Walls: The Travertine Series

From Desert Sunset to Your Walls: The Travertine Series

Let’s be honest—most modern lighting feels a bit, well, cold. It’s all shiny metals and perfect glass. But at home, we want to feel grounded. We want warmth.

That’s exactly why we fell in love with travertine. It’s this incredibly ancient, porous stone that looks like it has a million stories to tell. No two pieces are ever the same because nature doesn’t do copy-and-paste.

Today, we’re taking you behind the curtain to show you how our three signature pieces—the Horizon, the Petra, and the Dario—went from a wild idea in the desert to the statement lighting on your walls.

1. The Spark: A Golden Hour Golden Idea

The entire collection was born during a team scouting trip out in the desert. We were sitting there watching the sunset, and as the sun dipped below the horizon, this warm, golden light hit the weathered canyon rocks. The contrast was breathtaking—the rugged, ancient stone being completely softened by this glowing light.

Right then and there, we knew we had to recreate that exact vibe for your home. We took that one sunset and broke it down into three unique design vibes:

  • The Horizon Sconce: This one is all about that long, peaceful horizontal line right before the sun disappears. It’s wide, calming, and spacious.

  • The Petra Sconce: Named after ancient rock cities, this piece focuses on the "stone" itself. It’s bold, grounded, and has that raw, elemental power.

  • The Dario Sconce: This is our nod to modern architecture. We wanted to see what happened when you take that raw desert rock and cut it into sharp, clean geometric angles to slice the light.

2. Sketching It Out: Keeping it Raw

Back in the studio, the pencils hit the paper. The biggest challenge on day one? Figuring out how to make heavy stone look like it's floating. Our designers filled sketchbooks trying to find the perfect sweet spot where the light source sits just far enough behind the stone. We didn’t want the bulb to blind you; we wanted the light to peek through the natural pores and wash over the edges, just like that desert sunset.

3. The 3D Digital Sandbox

Once we had a sketch we loved, we moved it into 3D software. This is where the science meets the art.

We ran digital light simulations over and over again. We adjusted the thickness of the stone plate down to the millimeter and experimented with LED spacing. If the stone was too thick, the glow was too weak. If it was too thin, it looked cheap. We tweaked the digital models until the ambient glow felt incredibly cozy and premium.

4. The "Oh No" Moments: Real Talk on Design Challenges

Every good design has a messy middle. We hit a few walls making these, and we want to be real with you about how we got through them.

The Big Debate: Real Stone vs. Fake Stone

When we made our first prototypes, we actually tried using engineered faux stone. It was cheaper, way lighter, and much easier to cut without breaking. But when we turned the light on? Total flop. It looked sterile, plastic, and totally missed the soul of the desert.

So, we threw that idea in the trash. We committed to 100% genuine travertine. Yes, it’s heavy, and yes, it’s a pain to cut because it’s fragile, but that authentic texture is everything. You just can't fake real quality.

Nailing the Size (The Goldilocks Scale)

How did we land on the final dimensions? Lots of trial and error. We built five different rounds of physical prototypes. We realized that if the sconce was too small, the beautiful stone patterns got lost, and the fixture would overheat. If it was too massive, it felt like a boulder hanging on your wall.

We adjusted the scale until it felt "just right"—substantial enough to be an art piece on your wall, but sleek enough not to overcrowd your space.

The 8-Month Clock

From that first sunset sketch to the final box ready to ship, it took us a full 8 months. Fun fact: we spent two whole months just perfecting a invisible, matte sealing coat. We needed something that would keep dust out of the stone’s pores without ruining that beautiful, raw matte texture.

5. Made by Hand: The Artisans’ Touch

You can plan everything on a computer, but at the end of the day, a machine can’t feel the stone.

Our craftsmen have been working with masonry for decades. Because real travertine chips easily, they have to slice, hollow out, and sand every single sconce by hand. They meticulously bevel the edges so they feel smooth but still look completely natural. When you buy one of these, you are literally getting a handmade sculpture.

6. Styling Guide: Where Do They Belong?

The best part about this collection is how versatile it is. Whether your style is Organic Modern, California Casual, Japandi, or Minimalist Luxury, these fit right in. Here is how we love to style them:

🌅 The Horizon: Best for Chill Spaces

Because of its wide, calming shape, the Horizon is a superstar in the bedroom. Pop a pair of these on either side of your bed instead of traditional nightstand lamps—it completely cleans up your space and creates a boutique hotel vibe. It’s also incredible lined up down a long hallway or framing a dining room table.

🗿 The Petra: Best for Making a Statement

The Petra is heavy and architectural. It wants to be seen. This is the piece you put in your entryway/foyer to instantly wow guests the second they walk through the door. It’s also perfect for a living room accent wall next to a large mirror or textured art piece, or even in a minimalist home office/den.

📐 The Dario: Best for the Modernist

If you love clean lines and high design, the Dario is your match. Its geometric shape creates cool, sharp shadows. We love seeing this one in a powder room/bathroom next to a sleek vanity mirror, or anchoring a minimalist reading nook over a cozy armchair.

Wrap Up: Light Up Your Sanctuary

Architect Louis Kahn once said, "The sun never knew how great it was until it hit the side of a building." We like to think these sconces do the same thing for your home.

We spent the better part of a year obsessing over every detail of the Horizon, Petra, and Dario series so that when you flip that switch at the end of a long day, you don't just get light—you get an instant feeling of peace.
