A chandelier is usually the heaviest light in a room, and it hangs right above the places where people gather. That is why the way it attaches to the ceiling is worth getting right.
Every chandelier installation follows the same three stages: assemble the fixture, secure the ceiling bracket, then connect the wires and fit the canopy, which is the decorative cover that hides the electrical box. What changes is the mounting hardware supplied with your chandelier. This guide compares the three styles you are most likely to find, surface-mount, side-mount and the American-style crossbar plate, and walks through each one in three steps, with a video and a PDF manual for each.
Which Mounting Style Does Your Chandelier Use?
Before you start, find the mounting hardware that came with your chandelier and match it to one of these three styles. The difference is the shape of the mounting plate and where its fixing points are.

How to Install a Surface-Mount Chandelier
On a padded work surface, assemble the fixture in the order shown in its product manual. Protect delicate finishes, and set the chain or rod length if the design allows it.
Position the flat mounting plate at the ceiling electrical box or another approved support. Line up the mounting points and tighten the designated screws from the front of the plate. Use the specified fasteners and confirm that the bracket is secure.
Have a qualified electrician connect the wires according to the fixture diagram. Keep all connections inside the electrical box, and make sure no wires are trapped or squeezed. Raise the canopy and secure it with the retaining hardware supplied for this style.
How to Install a Side-Mount Chandelier
Assemble the fixture on a padded surface, following its product manual. Check that all the parts are included, and set the chain or rod length as directed.
Line up the bracket with the ceiling electrical box or another approved support. Tighten the designated side-facing screws as shown in the instructions. Don’t substitute front-facing screws or hardware from another mounting style, and check that the bracket is stable.
A qualified electrician should make the connections using the fixture diagram. Place the wires inside the electrical box, then raise the canopy and secure it with the side-mount system’s designated hardware. Check that the canopy is even all the way around.
How to Install a Chandelier with an American-Style Crossbar Plate
Lay out the components and assemble the fixture according to its manual. Protect the decorative parts, and set the chain or rod length as instructed.
Position the crossbar-style mounting plate across the ceiling electrical box. Line up its mounting slots with the matching mounting points and secure it with the specified screws. The central threaded connector works with the fixture’s hanging hardware and canopy, so follow the matching instructions for the exact assembly.
Have a qualified electrician complete the wiring according to the product diagram. Keep the connections inside the electrical box, raise the canopy, and secure it with the supplied threaded connector and retaining hardware. Check that the canopy is neat against the ceiling and that the chandelier hangs straight.
