The Pania picture light
Turn any wall into a gallery.
Solid brass, hand-finished, and made for one beautiful job: making the art you love impossible to walk past. Hang it over a painting, a portrait or a mirror and watch the whole room change.

Drag to compare
Same painting. Same wall. One switch.
A ceiling light flattens art. A picture light pours down the canvas, so brushstrokes catch, gilding glints and colors look the way the artist meant.

Look closer
Then closer still.
Every ornament on Pania comes from Greek and Roman architecture.

The same leaf carved atop every Corinthian column. It has crowned palaces, ceilings and fine furniture for over 2,000 years. Now it holds your light.

A fan of leaves around a central flower, seen on Greek temples and Federal-style American doorways. Raised in real relief, so it catches the light.

Clipped corners and a beaded rim borrowed from classical mantels. Pretty from the front, and it neatly hides the wall box behind it.

Loosen the thumb screw, tilt the shade, tighten. Aim the light exactly where your art needs it, no tools required.
Inside the workshop
Born in fire. Finished by hand.
We took our camera onto the workshop floor and followed a Pania from raw brass to its first glow. Press play, then follow the six steps below.
- Step one
Cutting the brass
Solid brass tube and sheet are cut to length for each size. A 29.9″ shade starts life as 29.9″ of solid metal.
- Step two
Casting the ornaments
The acanthus arm, palmette panel and end finials are cast in brass, then cleaned so every leaf edge stays crisp.
- Step three
Ornament brazing
Each ornament is set by eye, then fused to the shade with a torch. It becomes part of the metal, never glued on.
- Step four
Finishing by hand
Seams are filed and the surface is brushed by hand. This is where the soft, uneven depth comes from, so no two are exactly alike.
- Step five
Spray finish and curing
The antique tone goes on in even coats and is cured, sealing the brass against fingerprints and tarnish.
- Step six
Wiring and first light
Sockets are wired, the swivel is set, and every lamp is switched on before it leaves the bench.
Every piece is touched by hand.
That is why it looks warm, not perfect.
Size finder
Your perfect length in five seconds.
Curators follow one simple rule: the light should span about half to two-thirds of the frame. Type your frame’s width (outside edge to outside edge) and we’ll do the math.
Most framed landscapes over a sofa are 30–48 in wide.
Small · 17.7″
L 45 cm × H 6.1″. Portraits, small oils and single vanity mirrors up to about 32″ wide.
Medium · 22.8″
L 58 cm × H 6.1″. The all-rounder for art from about 32″ to 42″ wide.
Large · 29.9″
L 76 cm × H 6.1″. Statement landscapes, double vanities and over-mantel pieces 42″ and up.
All three share the same 6.1″ height and 6.1″ wall projection. Need a length in between? Radilum makes custom sizes on request.
Room by room
Where will yours glow?
Paintings are just the start. Pick a room to see where Pania fits, how big the room can be, and which length to choose.

Along the stacks
In a library, every portrait between the shelves deserves its own light. A row of Panias turns a long room into a private gallery after dark.
- Room size
- Libraries, halls and dens, about 150–400 sq ft
- Mount over
- Portraits and paintings hung between bookcases
- Art width
- 24–40″ wide
- Mount height
- Shade 3–6″ above the top of each frame

Above the console
The first thing guests see when they walk in. On a dimmer, Pania turns a portrait into the warmest welcome in the house.
- Room size
- Living rooms and entryways, about 200–400 sq ft
- Mount over
- Art above a console, writing desk or sofa
- Art width
- 24–42″ wide
- Mount height
- Shade 3–6″ above the top of the frame

Over the mirror
Light from above falls on your face, not just the glass. Damp-location rated, so a vanity feels like a boutique hotel. Just keep it out of the shower.
- Room size
- Powder rooms to primary baths, about 40–150 sq ft
- Mount over
- A vanity mirror, centered on the sink
- Mirror width
- 24–32″: Small · 32–42″: Medium · 42″+: Large
- Mount height
- 2–4″ above the mirror. Damp areas only, not in the shower

Beside the bed
Over a small print above the nightstand, Pania doubles as a soft evening glow. Nearly a third of Pania orders are for two or more, so hang one on each side for perfect symmetry.
- Room size
- Bedrooms, about 120–250 sq ft
- Mount over
- Art or a mirror above each nightstand
- Art width
- 14–28″ per side
- Mount height
- Shade 3–6″ above each frame

Behind the desk
On video calls, the wall behind you is your backdrop. A lit portrait says “I have taste” before you say a word, and adds soft fill light for the camera.
- Room size
- Home offices and studies, about 80–150 sq ft
- Mount over
- A painting on the wall behind the desk, or the centerpiece of a gallery wall
- Art width
- 18–32″ wide
- Mount height
- Keep the art at eye level on camera, lamp 3–6″ above

Above the sideboard
Dim the chandelier, leave Pania on, and dinner instantly feels candlelit. The painting becomes part of the conversation.
- Room size
- Dining rooms, about 150–300 sq ft
- Mount over
- Art above a sideboard or buffet
- Art width
- 32–48″ wide
- Mount height
- Shade 3–6″ above the frame, centered on the sideboard
Installation
Hang it like a curator.
Four rules the pros use, so your art looks gallery-lit on day one.
Center it on the art
Hang the art first, then place the wall box on the frame’s center line, not the wall’s.
Mount it just above the frame
As a guide, the shade should sit about 3–6″ above the top edge. Too high and the light misses the canvas; too low and it crowds the frame.
Aim for the top third
Tilt the swivel joint so the brightest light lands on the upper third. It falls off naturally toward the bottom, just like in a museum.
Choose warm, low-heat bulbs
E12 candelabra LEDs at 2700K, around 3–4W each, glow like candlelight and stay cool near canvas and paper.
Good to know
Care, and your questions answered.
Please don’t polish it.
The darker tones in the crevices and the soft gold on the high points were put there on purpose. Brass polish would strip them back to bright yellow metal.
Dust with a dry, soft cloth. For fingerprints, use a barely damp microfiber cloth and dry it right away. That’s all it needs, for decades.
Will the light damage my painting?
Not with LED bulbs. LEDs give off very little heat and almost no UV, which is why museums use them. Avoid old incandescent bulbs near valuable originals or works on paper.
Can I hang it over a mirror instead of art?
Yes, and many customers do. It is rated for damp locations, so it is suitable above a bathroom vanity. Keep it out of shower enclosures and other wet zones.
Is it plug-in or hardwired?
Hardwired. It mounts over a recessed wall junction box and is controlled by your wall switch. We recommend a licensed electrician for installation.
Which bulbs should I buy?
E12 candelabra-base LED bulbs in warm white (2700K), 3–4W each, roughly a 40W incandescent equivalent. Longer sizes take more bulbs. Bulbs are not included.
Can I dim it?
Yes. Use dimmable E12 LED bulbs with a dimmer made for LEDs, such as Lutron or Leviton models. Non-dimmable bulbs will run at full brightness only.
Is it really solid brass?
Yes. The body, arm, shade and backplate are brass throughout, not plated steel or zinc. You will feel the weight the moment you unbox it.
Can I get a different length or finish?
Radilum can make custom lengths, and other finishes from our Finishes Library or a Pantone color are available on request. Email us before ordering and we will confirm the details.

The iron & brass story
Cast, chased and finished by hand
Our brass and iron fixtures are cast, chased and finished in our own workshop — gold-leafed, bronzed or lacquered by hand, which is why no two carry exactly the same glow. Colour is grown in the finishing bath rather than sprayed on, then sealed to age gracefully. Choose a finish above, or ask for any other metal finish from the Finishes Library.
Mounting heights for wall lamps
Where the light sits on the wall decides whether it reads as decoration or as useful light.
