The rule of thumb.
The most universally recommended formula for kitchen island pendant lighting is simple: hang one pendant for every 2 feet of island length. For most American kitchens, that means 2 to 4 pendants — with 3 being the most common and most visually balanced.

§ 02 · Spacing & Placement
Even spacing, clean margins.
Pendants should be evenly spaced across the island, with equal margins on each end. Leave at least 6–8 inches from the island edges and 24–30 inches between pendant centers.
§ 03 · Hanging Height
How low to hang.
The standard recommendation is 30–36 inches from the bottom of the pendant to the counter surface. Adjustments are needed for taller ceilings or if you're installing above a dining table (seat height) rather than a work surface.

Stay 6–8″ narrower than island
If your island is 42″ wide, choose pendants no wider than 34–36″ total combined width. This ensures visual breathing room on the sides and avoids a crowded look.
3 is almost always better than 2
Two pendants feel symmetrical but static. Three creates rhythm and visual energy. Even on a 5-foot island, 3 smaller pendants outperform 2 larger ones for most kitchen styles.
Use 2700K–3000K bulbs
Warm white (2700K) creates the most flattering, inviting atmosphere for kitchen and dining spaces. Avoid cool white (4000K+) over islands — it's clinical and flattens brass finishes.
