Woven by hand, lit softly

The rattan story

Woven by hand, lit softly

Rattan is soaked, bent and woven around a frame by hand, so the weave is never mechanically regular. It filters light into a warm, dappled glow and suits coastal, farmhouse and organic-modern rooms.

Bring nature's breath home.Light a lamp. Live slower.

The days move fast; home shouldn't. A rattan lamp is a small act of resistance — sunlight woven into shape, filling the room with the calm of a slow afternoon, long after the sun has gone down.

Somewhere in the house, one lamp is always on island time.

§ 01 · The Light It Makes

Switch it on, and the walls fill with lace.

This is the part no photo of the lamp itself can show you. Light slips between the woven canes and lands on your walls and ceiling as dappled, drifting geometry — like late sun through leaves, held still.

It isn't overhead glare; it's atmosphere. The weave softens every bulb into a warm, low-key glow that flatters faces, calms a room at dinner, and turns an ordinary Tuesday night into something you want to sit inside a little longer.

§ 02 · Material & Craft

Grown by the sun, finished by hand.

Rattan is one of the fastest-renewing canes on earth — harvested, not logged. What the material gives, the maker completes.

Rattan cane close-upNatural rattan cane — close view of fiber and color
The Material
Natural Rattan.
Sun-cured tropical cane — non-toxic, free of paints and plastics, carrying a faint, clean scent of dried grass. A renewable fiber that regrows in years, not decades.
Artisan hands weavingAn artisan's hands weaving a rattan lampshade
The Hands
Generations of Weavers.
Every shade is woven by artisans practicing a craft passed down through families. The slight pull of a human hand leaves a rhythm in the weave no machine can copy — which is exactly why no two lamps match.
Treated cane / durability detailTreated rattan cane — smooth, sealed and resilient
The Toughness
Stronger Than It Looks.
Forget "fragile." Each cane is treated against insects and moisture, then sealed — rattan has furnished humid tropical homes for generations. Handled normally, these lamps are built to be kept, not replaced.
§ 03 · The Making

From a green cane to your ceiling, in five patient steps.

Most lamps are assembled. Ours are grown, cured, bent, and woven — here is the whole journey.

Raw rattan poles, sorted by handSorting raw rattan poles for color and grain
i.
Selecting the cane
Mature tropical rattan poles are chosen one by one for even color, straight grain, and flexibility — the bent and blemished are set aside.
Canes sun-curing / treatment bathRattan canes sun-curing after insect and moisture treatment
ii.
Curing & treating
The canes are washed and sun-cured, then treated against insects and moisture — the quiet step that turns a garden material into a household one.
Steam-bending canes over a formSteam-bending structural canes around a wooden form
iii.
Bending the frame
Softened with steam, the structural canes are bent by hand around wooden forms and held until they remember the curve for good.
Artisan hands mid-weaveAn artisan hand-weaving the lampshade, strand over strand
iv.
The weave
The heart of it. An artisan weaves strand over strand for hours per shade, keeping the tension even by feel alone. This is where each lamp becomes one of one.
Sealing edges / fitting the cordFinishing the edges and fitting the socket and cord
v.
Finishing & wiring
Edges are smoothed and sealed, the socket and cord are fitted, and every lamp is checked over before it is wrapped for the journey to you.
§ 04 · The Styling Guide

You saw it and loved it. Here's where it goes.

Four rooms, four picks, and the design styles each one slips into — so the decision is already half made.

§ 05 · Before You Order

Easy to live with, honest by nature.

How do I clean it?

Gently. A feather duster or soft brush every week or two keeps the weave fresh; for more, wipe along the canes with a barely-damp cloth and let it air-dry. No polishes, no soaking — that's the entire routine.

What bulbs does it take?

It varies by design — each lamp uses a common household socket, and the exact base is listed in the specs on every product page. Whatever the fitting, we recommend a warm-white LED (2700K) to make the most of the weave's glow; LEDs also run cool, which natural fiber appreciates.

Is installation complicated?

No more than any ceiling pendant — and because rattan is remarkably light, hanging it is easier on both the ceiling and the installer. Cord length is adjustable at installation, so you can set the drop exactly where your table wants it. For hardwiring, we recommend a licensed electrician.

Won't rattan fall apart over time?

That's the old reputation, not the reality. Our cane is treated against insects and moisture and sealed before weaving — the same fiber that has furnished humid tropical homes for generations. Kept indoors and dusted now and then, it's a keep-for-years piece.

Can it go in a bathroom or outdoors?

Covered, ventilated spaces are fine — a porch ceiling, a sunroom, a powder room. Skip anywhere it would be rained on or sit in constant steam; natural cane, like most of us, prefers not to be soaked.

An Honest Note
What natural really means.
  • Slight color variation from cane to cane — rattan tans in the sun like anything living.
  • Small nodes and joints along the fiber — the plant's own knuckles, left visible.
  • Minor irregularities in the weave — the fingerprint of the hand that made it.
  • Faint binding marks where structural canes meet — signs of hand-assembly, not damage.

If you find one of these on your lamp, you haven't found a flaw — you've found the maker.

§ 06 · Woven to Order

If you can sketch it, our weavers can shape it.

Because every piece is made by hand, the catalog is a starting point, not a limit. A wider dome, a taller drum, a shape drawn on a napkin for your restaurant or stairwell — send us the idea and your dimensions, and we'll confirm what's possible with a quote, no obligation.

Choosing a table or floor lamp

A lamp is sized to the surface and the seat next to it, not to the room.

BedsideShade bottom at eye level when you sit up — usually 24–27″ above the mattress; lamp height about ⅔ of the nightstand height plus the stand.
Reading cornerFloor lamp shade bottom just below seated eye level (40–42″ from the floor), placed 12–18″ behind the chair arm.
Console & sideboardLamp about 1.5× the console height; a pair reads best set ⅓ in from each end.
