Ceramic vs. Aluminum lampshade comparison

Bombilla no incluida.

The Thetford Series — hero
Radilum · Thetford Series

Victorian form.
Modern restraint.

Porcelain & aluminium shades. Solid brass arms.
A fixture that looks like it was always there.

§ 01 · Design Philosophy

Three principles, one coherent voice.

The Thetford Series is not a mood board assembled from Pinterest references. It is a disciplined answer to a single question: what does a lamp look like when it respects the room? Every decision — the curve of the shade, the weight of the arm, the choice of porcelain over glass — follows from the three principles below.

01
Unfitted Aesthetic

Breaking away from industrial mass-production to create a home that feels curated over a lifetime. Nothing in this collection was designed to match a catalogue. It was designed to outlast one.

02
Victorian Utility

Drawing silhouettes from ancient scullery lamps — refined for the heart of the modern home. The proportions are historical. The finish and light source are this century.

03
Austere Beauty

Rejecting clutter for perfect proportions and premium materials that speak for themselves. There are no decorative flourishes because none are needed. The grandeur is in the restraint.

§ 03 · The Soul of Material

Two shades. Two entirely different rooms.

The Thetford Series offers two shade materials — not as a finish option but as a design decision. The choice between Translucent Porcelain and Industrial Aluminium changes the quality of light, the character of the room, and the decade the space seems to come from. Both are right. The question is which is right for your room.

Translucent Porcelain
Shade Option A
Translucent Porcelain
The Glow
Unlike metal, porcelain is semi-translucent. When lit, the entire shade emits a soft, ethereal warmth — the lamp becomes a lantern, not just a light source.
Artisanal Texture
A matte, bone-like finish that feels handmade and organic to the touch. No two shades are perfectly identical — the variation is the point.
Industrial Aluminium
Shade Option B
Industrial Aluminium
Defined Focus
Opaque and structured. Light is directed strictly downward to create dramatic focal points — ideal for task areas that need contrast, not atmosphere.
Lasting Finish
Lightweight and corrosion-resistant, powder-coated for decades of service. The material of choice for Modern Farmhouse and industrial-organic interiors.
Designer's Note on Mixing

The two materials are designed to coexist. A common specification: Porcelain pendants over the kitchen island (where atmosphere matters) and Aluminium in the pantry or utility area (where task focus is everything). The contrast reads as collected over time — the hallmark of a premium English interior.

§ 04 · The Kitchen Argument
Thetford in the kitchen
Why Thetford Belongs Here

The kitchen essential you didn't know you were missing.

01Anti-Glare Logic

Modern kitchens suffer from over-lighting — recessed LEDs spaced every 18 inches, illuminating nothing in particular at full intensity. Thetford brings light down to human scale, creating intimacy without sacrificing task performance. The ceiling becomes quiet. The island becomes the room.

02Curated Mixing

The series is designed to be mixed deliberately. Porcelain over the island — Aluminium in the pantry — Sconce above the backsplash. Each fixture speaks the same language with a different inflection. The result is a room that reads as designed, not decorated.

§ 05 · Designer's Guide

Two rules that change the installation.

Lighting placement is the last decision made and the one that undoes everything else. The two principles below come from our specification team — distilled from hundreds of kitchen projects where the placement was either exactly right or nearly right.

The Rule of Three
Specification Rule 01
The Rule of Three
"For islands between 6 ft and 8 ft, three single pendants provide the most balanced visual rhythm and shadow-free task lighting. Space them at equal thirds — never centred as a pair."
Mastering Mixed Metals
Specification Rule 02
Mastering Mixed Metals
"Don't be afraid to pair Brass fixtures with Black or Nickel cabinetry hardware. This 'collected' style is the hallmark of premium English design — and the reason Thetford reads as curated, not coordinated."
"The best kitchen lighting is the kind that makes guests ask about the food, not the fixtures — because it disappears into the room."

Measuring for Pendant Lighting

When installing pendants and chandeliers, it’s important to consider how you want your fixtures to hang in relation to the other furnishings in your space. Read on for our recommendations on how to hang the perfect light.

Kitchen

Aim for 30–36″ from the bottom of your fixture’s shade to the top of your island or countertop. Space multiple pendants 26–30″ apart. For a sense of proportion and balance, allow 12″ from the outermost fixture to the edge of your counter.

Dining Room

For optimal lighting and visibility, the bottom of your pendant should sit 30″ from the surface of your dining table. To scale your fixture, take the length and width of the room in feet, then convert that to inches. For a 10′ by 14′ room, the chandelier should be about 24″ wide.

Bedroom

If you’re hanging a pendant above a nightstand, allow for at least 30″ between the bottom of the shade and your nightstand’s surface. To keep the look balanced, center your pendant over your nightstand.
